I admit, this is one of my mistakes, I have been skimming.
I recently noticed that I don’t remember little details about some issues. I asked myself what’s the reason for this and I found out. I have been reading everything from daily news to books and reports so quickly. I think pressure and lack of time are main reasons for this attitude.
I’m confessing my mistake and I promise to be more professional in my reading in the future.
I heared that there are special courses to teach people fast reading or skimming. I mean do we have to attend a course to do that? Don’t we do this on daily basis without even thinking about it? Our time is running ridiculously out of our hand and we do a lot of things as quickly as we can?
My philosophy was always to give the right time to everything I do. Working, reading, learning, eating, sleeping, relaxing, everything has a time of its own.
I learned that skimming can make people aware of certain things and can make them able to talk the language and understand what is told to them, but it will never make you know practically knowledgeable.
My del.icio.us bookmarks

That’s Interesting !
did you notice that you were actually skimming when u wrote this article ? (J/k)
so I couldn’t understand by the end of the article why skimming is bad.
aren’t you saying at the end that we should learn how to be Good Skimmers?
Are serious Nidal .. I’m shocked now because I though my ideas were clear
let me just sum it up again. my point is that we should give everything , especially reading, it’s right time (i.e. we should not be skimming).
What I think is that skimming makes you aware of the general concept of a certain subject but it will not lead you to the core practical knowledge of it. besides the fact that you are working your brain with the minimum effort.
So, it’s your choice. For me its bad but you may think it’s good as well.
I hope I’m not skimming this time, thanks for the note.
well… i guess skimming is good for some issues… as u said u need to be updated.. u need to know whats is going around you.. yet not all subject your read is in yr interest..
you cant say its bad coz am sure when u r reading something you are really interested in you will be reading it not skimming it..
am sure it happened with you when sometimes u are going throug the news paper or surfing the internet and you find an interesting subject .. you print it and read it later..
again.. in my point of view skimming is good coz it will make u aware of the world around you not to be BLIND .. and reading is good when u want to really know and learn about things..
Thank you very much Lul, this differentiation is what I’ve been looking for.
For sure, we usually go through the internet, the news or certain subjects very quickly just to know what’s going on. But it becomes dangerous when we skim our study subjects or professional courses. Maybe you don’t do it but I know lots of people who do.
In fact one of my mistakes is that I’ve been skimming industry reports that I don’t remember little details on those reports. In short, I was not working out my brain because I don’t have time.
What I see is a problem is that skimming or fast reading is becoming a trend these days. That’s why I decided to make this note.
Thanks again Lul
I think that skimming is not bad at the same time it is not good, but sometimes you need to skim, and some other times you need to read carefully it depends on the subject.
As you said because of lack of time we are forced to skim not to read carefully, for me I read something very quickly when I am looking only at occasional lines or words, in order to get a general idea of its contents.
But when any subject is related to my career or any other important topic, of course I will read if very carefully, and I agree with you in this case only (Skimming is bad) because if I skim in this case I will lose some essential issues that will help me to develop my self.
So, Skimming is like a medicine, you have to take it in a specific case and a particular time, just to get the whole benefits of it.
I think you’ve summed it up perfectly Qusai. Thanks.
time, relevancy, infolust and stage of familiarity with the new subject are the main factors that determine our stand towards material within our hands.
thanks again for sharing.
You’re right Bilal, Those are all factor which control our approach. I think the most critical of which is time.
I hope you wont be skimming any of my articles ..
thanks for the comment.
